A computer is a machine that takes input, processes it, stores results, and produces output. That's it. Everything from your phone to a supercomputer follows this same four-part model.

The Four Core Functions

A Simple Mental Model

Think of a computer like a kitchen:

Input = ingredients you bring in
Processing = the chef following a recipe
Storage = the pantry (long-term) and the counter (short-term)
Output = the finished meal served to you

The "recipe" is software. The "kitchen equipment" is hardware. Both are useless without the other.

Hardware vs. Software

Hardware — the physical parts you can touch: chips, drives, screens, cables
Software — the instructions that tell hardware what to do: operating systems, apps, code

Software runs on top of hardware. The same laptop can run Windows, Linux, or macOS — the hardware doesn't change, only the software does.

Types of Computers

Computers come in many shapes, but they all follow the same model:

Personal computers (PC/Mac) — general purpose, used daily
Servers — powerful machines that serve data to other computers
Smartphones — pocket-sized computers with radios built in
Embedded systems — computers inside appliances, cars, medical devices
Supercomputers — massive clusters solving complex scientific problems
