What Is an Operating System?

The Operating System (OS) is the software layer between your hardware and your applications. Without it, every app would need to know exactly how to talk to your specific graphics card, storage drive, and memory chips — an impossible task.

The OS abstracts all of that complexity away.

What the OS Actually Does

1. Process Management

Every running program is a process. The OS:

Creates and terminates processes

Allocates memory when a program starts
Frees memory when a program closes

The OS organizes files on disk into a structured hierarchy:

4. Device Drivers

Hardware communicates through drivers — small programs the OS loads to talk to specific devices (printers, GPUs, USB devices).

The Kernel — The Core of the OS

The kernel is the heart of the OS. It runs with full access to hardware (kernel mode) while apps run with limited access (user mode).

When an app needs to read a file or open a network socket, it makes a system call — a request to the kernel to do it on its behalf.
